Neurosurgery has always been at the forefront of incorporating new technologies, because of the delicacy with which the brain must always be treated. Minimally invasive surgeries for tumors, endovascular treatment for aneurysms (no need to open the skull), brain stimulation techniques for the treatment of pain, Parkinson's etc, are already incorporated realities. Senator McCain was submitted to a minimally invasive neurological surgery, performed through the eyelid; against the recommendation of his physicians, he returned to the Senate in a few days.
As in other medical specialties, the robot has been used recently in neurosurgery. It is capable of reducing by at least half the surgical time of some procedures. It is not a substitute for the surgeon, but an aggregate technology.
Many of the procedures in neurosurgery include removal or injury of tumors, nodules, cysts, etc. Recently, laser ablation of tumors and other brain lesions has been introduced. The technology, which includes only a cranial perforation, incorporates the precision of neurosurgery, the real-time measurement of brain temperature and the possibility of observing in real time the lesion being performed, transferring greater safety to the procedure.
Another technology under development is the use of ultrasound focused on neurosurgery. This is a totally non-invasive technology, without any cut, and that is capable of performing well located lesions. It still has a way to go, but it is there to stay, and its proper development can change many paradigms.
Often, medicine and society belatedly incorporate existing technologies, such as GPS, for example, which was already available long ago in the military sphere. But with increasingly easy access to new technologies, we will see them implemented in medicine more and more quickly.
